Xibalba, The Mayan Underworld
Discover the legend beneath the jungle
For the ancient Maya, caves and cenotes were not just natural wonders: they were sacred places and the gateways to Xibalba, the underworld. Its name is often translated as “place of fear”, and it was believed to be ruled by the Lords of Death.
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the K’iche’ Maya, tells how the Hero Twins, Hunahpú and Xbalanqué, descended into Xibalba and defeated its lords with courage and cunning. Their story turned the underworld into a symbol of transformation and rebirth.
Beneath the Riviera Maya, rainwater has been filtering through the limestone for thousands of years, carving tunnels, vaults and underground rivers. Inside, stalactites and stalagmites grow drop by drop, creating landscapes that seem to belong to another world.
Local tradition also speaks of the Aluxes, small guardian spirits of the jungle and its caves, who protect these places and ask visitors for respect.
